Ajisai Japanese Fusion

A few weeks ago I noticed there was a new Japanese spot going in at Cameron Village.  I was nervous and excited about it, because it was advertised as a “fusion Japanese” restaurant.  I’m very weary of fusion restaurants, so I went in with my guard up.

Overall:  4.25 out of 5

Food/Beverage:  4.5 out of 5

Ambiance:  4  out of 5

Value:  4 out of 5

Service: 4.5 out of 5

Let’s start by saying I LOVED it.  It wasn’t quite Waraji or Yuri level of delicious, but the food was very tasty and the presentation was beautiful.  They have a coupon on Yelp for a free appetizer with your meal if you check it.  There were only two choices, one of which was edamame.  We were happy with that.  At this point, they don’t have a liquor license but they will very soon! At that point, they will have a drink specials list.  We are looking forward to this.

We ordered 6 rolls total, three at a time.

The first set consisted of the Manhattan roll (tuna and avocado topped with yellowtail, jalapeño and jalapeño citrus sauce), Amazing (yellowtail, tuna, salmon and avocado topped with scallop and wasabi salsa, served with chef’s sauce), and the viking roll (eel, avocado and crunchy topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail and spicy sauce).  My favorite was the Amazing roll.  The scallop and the jalapeño on top were a perfect match for the insides.  We didn’t care for the special sauce, so the waitress brought us a bowl of spicy mayo.

The second set included the volcano (deep fried white tuna, avocado and tobiko served with cilantro sauce) and two other rolls that I don’t see listed on the on line menu.  I can tell you, we ate the entire plate clean.   Usually, I skip the fried rolls but this one was very lightly fried and had a great amount of flavor in the batter.

They have a good wine and beer selection for now, but I will never order the malbec again.  It tasted a bit like feet.  My second glass was a pinot noir and it was delightful.

Our waitress was great! She was enthusiastic about the choices and quick to bring replacement sauces.  I am so excited that this restaurant is so close by and affordable.  Our bill was about $30/person with an appetizer, 6 rolls and two drinks a piece.  Between the three of us, we were full and happy by the end of the night.
