WHAT IS IN A NAME?
I am beginning a new chapter in my food blogging in my attempt to find the best, cheapest, most authentic food. Dive Bombing. In this section, I will be scouting out no-name, or close to no-name, joints where there are few frills and the concentration is focused on the food instead of the flare.
So, first I had to determine what would consider a dive. Well, Playboy magazine defines a dive as “A church for down-and-outers and those who romanticize them, a rare place where high and low rub elbows—bums and poets, thieves and slumming celebrities. It’s a place that wears its history proudly.” I quite like that. These are places where anyone can feel at home. A place where the culture behind the food shines brightly. Other than that, there isn’t much else to it.
My personal criteria will include the following:
1. Culture/history outshines the decoration
2. Price of the meal for one person doesn’t exceed $15 and you leave feeling food
3. No table cloths
4. Sit where you want attitude
5. Small staff – may be one or two people working/cooking/serving/taking your money
6. Hard to find – off the beaten path with no website
I want to feel comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time; I want to feel like the person cooking the food has been cooking this kind of food their entire life and couldn’t continue in this world were they not able to cook any longer. I will look high and low for these little culinary gems. The list will include bars and restaurants from all different ethnicities.
I will need everyone’s help with this, considering how difficult these places will be to find. If you have a favorite spot, please comment here, on my Facebook page, twitter feed…any or all of those.
