Whenever I get a craving for tacos, the first place I think of is Chubby’s.  And with three locations in the Raleigh-Durham area, I never have to go too far. My favorite location is the one on Wycliff Rd, even with the limited parking.  They have a patio out front that gets plenty of shade.

I’m going to start with my score on food/beverage.  The menu is BIG!  As a most-times pescatarian, there are a lot of choices for me and my veggie cohorts.  They offer tacos, burritos, salads, gorditas/tortas (sort of sandwiches), nachos and have great queso.

They also have one of those self-service salsa bars with at least 12 choices ranging from mild to makes you cough hot.  I really like the delicious green one than is a combination of guacamole and salsa.  Even though it sounds a little strange, it works out very well.  Their straight up guacamole is good, but always requires salt in my opinion.  When I go to Chubby’s, I go for tacos.  The items on the taco menu can be ordered a la cart or as a meal with chips, beans, rice and a drink for an extra $2.  I usually order a la cart, which also comes with some chips. Items on the a la cart menu range from $2-3 dollars, depending on fillings.  They have someone behind the bar grilling up your food fresh to order, so it’s hard to go wrong. Typically I order one grilled shrimp and one grilled talapia ($3 each).  The fish and shrimp are both cooked very well! They are covered in a chipotle creme sauce and pico de gallo that are both VERY good, and served on your choice of flour or corn tortilla.  If you don’t ask, they come on the corn tortillas.  I don’t think either are made in house, but that’s ok by me!

This particular day, I ordered the shrimp special taco ($3).  It was served with a special hot and spicy sauce and grilled onions.  Super good!  My lunch buddy ordered the shrimp as well and also a barbacoa taco.  It’s served with onions and cilantro (street style).  She enjoyed them both! Another meal time friend of mine often gets the Chubbychanga ($3.50) which can be filled with any of their meats.  He typically gets the beef and eats it until he thinks that death is on the horizon.

The drink selection is very small and very mediocre.  They have a few beers, including some Mexican beers (Dos Equis, Corona) and a few locals (Sweet Josie Brown). They even have a small on-tap selection.  The margaritas come either frozen or on the rocks and are from a mix.  They are over sour and very small.  BUT the price is good.  I can’t find it on their on-line menu, but I’m almost positive I paid $3 for my margarita.  The pitcher price is good too, and they have drink specials every day which helps.

The great thing about this place is that it’s very no frills. The prices are  fantastic.  I’ve never spent more than $15 when eating at Chubby’s, and that’s including the time I ordered cheese, guacamole, a pitcher of margaritas and my tacos.  The ambiance is fun, even though the place is a little small.

Service wise…ok, so…If you eat there, and order at the counter, the service is exactly what it needs to be.  Fast, polite, take your money kinda service. The few times I’ve ordered carryout, I’ve had the most horrendous customer service.  I’ve been hung up on, put on hold for 5 minutes before hanging up and calling back, been told I was calling the wrong location (the person on the phone answered “Chubby’s blue ridge” and when I asked if this was the location on Wycliff, I was told no).  But, once they take your order, picking up is a breeze.  You can skip to the little “pick up” area at the end of the bar and bypass the whole long line.  Still, this dropped my score a bit.

Overall, this is one of my favorite fast and cheap places to eat in Raleigh.  If you like tacos, you’re gonna like Chubby’s.  Get there! You won’t be sorry.
